The Common Ground Festival was an amazing experience for the uninitiated like me. The whole family got on the road at 7:30 AM and off to Unity. As suggested, we took the train from Unity to the fair.
Chartered in 1867, the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad is the 6th oldest continuously operating passenger railroad in the United States, including a 1913 Swedish steam engine. Taking the train created an excited anticipation for the kids and us too.
After 15 minutes of a somewhat wet ride, we arrived in the middle of the woods to a welcome of young, idealistic, young folk dying to show us the best of what Maine organic farmers, and alternative resources can give us.
A sea of tents, stalls, animal pens and exhibits, greeted us as we walked into the MOGFA complex.
We found a photo booth that uses tin type, local artisans that use reclaimed wood for beautiful furniture, recycled shopping bags, and all sorts of ways to reuse, recycle and reinvent.
The kids deftly made their way to the dwarf goats that were not for petting, but Ciaran couldn’t resist. Aine was very interested in the cows for some reason, and the mule/donkey agility course was a huge hit. Amazingly we bumped into one of the few families we know in Portland and watched the sheep dog trials for a while in the rain. After that was the rabbit barn, but Ciaran was very upset that he could not pet them.
All needed food at that point, and the organic fries did not last long. We got lemonade and Bill stayed in line to get a mediocre pizza but the crab roll was worth the wait. The farmers market looked amazing, the fragrant sweet annie was calling my name. We finally found the craft area right around the green building exhibits, in between the spinners and the fleece tent. Ciaran wanted to bring home an apple-picking ladder, and was very demonstrative about it. We met a photographer with amazing panoramic prints, and Aine quizzed an artist that paints on glass in reverse.
The contra dancing reminded me of set dancing back home and that got our spirits up again before we made one last effort to take it all in before we had to get the train back to Unity.
We lost our water bottles, our tempers and ourselves a few times, but we will do it all again next year.
